The Hardest Thing to Unpack

What is the hardest thing to unpack? I can answer that in two words: TOO MUCH!

Moving is stressful. Especially the packing. It takes longer than you think. There is never enough time. You find things you’ve forgotten you have. You find things you haven’t used in months, sometimes years, sometimes decades. Some of these items, you’ve moved once or twice or more. Its often easier to “just pack it” and deal with it later.

I’m not talking about sentimental items. We all have those; they stay with us.

I’m talking about the blow dryer that was replaced and now you have two. I’m talking about the keys you have no idea of what they unlock. I’m talking about everything in your junk drawer. The lotions, shampoos, the electric shavers and make up stuffed in the back of your bathroom cabinets, the dental floss you get when you visit the dentist, take home and never use. The clothes that almost fit, the purses you no longer carry, boxes of old photographs or even better – slides. When was the last time you used the potato ricer? Panini press or waffle iron. You get the idea.

There is nothing like getting to your new space with all its promise and struggling with where to put things.

 What to do?

Before you move, before you pack, PURGE! It’s one of the most important things you can do. It will free you up to create the home you picture. It will free you from struggle of where to put what. It will save you time.

If purging is hard for you, enlist the aid of a professional. Professional move managers and organizers have done this hundreds of times. They have experience and are usually granted authority a friend or family member is not. Investment on the front end can make for a much better outcome on the backend.
